Head Mod / Production
Let me level with you: I probably have no business running a zine. I've never participated in one before, not as an organizer or a contributor, and I missed out entirely on the first Ganqing zine back in 2021. I've waited for another one, but I never heard of any being organized for Ganqing and so it's turned into a "fine, I'll do it myself" kind of situation. I understand that makes for a huge red flag. I'm definitely learning as I go. But rest assured, I am committed to seeing this through. I give you my word as a full-grown adult with a full-time job that I have the means to deliver a product even if everything else falls apart.

With an eye for detail and strong editing skills, Cyn has helped get self-published novels press-ready in addition to being part of the original ganqing zine back in 2021.
about the zine
This is going to be a 'vision first' zine. I have a very specific idea for what I want to make, and I really do mean make: these will be hand bound zines, done in a variation of a traditional stab binding.I did make a prototype zine, a sort of proof-of-concept, so you can see what I'm going for in terms of construction and basic format (see images below). The final product may vary slightly, but over all that's the look I'm going for.
specifications
These specifications are still in development and may change as the project moves into creation and production periods. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
Physical copies will be a limited edition hand-bound (stab binding) soft cover book that will be (approximately) 7” wide and 8” tall. The sewing margin is about 1” so the interior usable page dimensions will be closer to 6” x 8”.
The plan is for full colour printing provided reasonable printing costs and quality can be sourced.
Estimating for around 150 pages, depending on what contributors create.
Digital copies will be formatted specifically for screen reading as a PDF, and will have an unlimited number of copies available
An alternative print-ready digital version will also be made available, likely in a standard statement size (5.5” x 8.5”), so those who would like to try printing and binding their own may do so. An instruction document will be included.
Theme/subject for content is open and up to individual contributors to decide how they would like to portray Ganqing in their art/story.
The Zine will be rated T or NC-17 or somewhere thereabouts. If contributors are unsure if their idea is too risqué, it can be discussed with the mod(s).
The Zine is aiming to be ‘break-even,’ meaning that the Zines will be priced to cover the cost to make them and no more; there will be no profit. Finance documents will be shared with contributors throughout the project, and then with the public after project completion.
All contributors will be compensated with a physical copy of the zine (and any merch) with shipping costs fully covered.
contributor guidelines
Interested in being a contributor? This section will provide some details as to what will be asked of those wanting to be involved. Like other aspects of this project, these guidelines are subject to change as the Zine takes shape, so we ask for any potential contributors to come in with an open mind and plenty of patience.
All contributors must be 18 years old or older by the end of the application period.
We will be looking for 15-20 artists and 8-10 writers. Some of these may be invited guest contributors.
Compensation for contributors will be a physical copy of the zine and any merch, with shipping costs covered.
Use of generative AI or similar programs/apps/software in any form is strictly prohibited. Doing so will result in immediate removal from the project.
artists
Successful artist contributors will be asked to complete one (1) single page piece.
Artists will have the option to do additional pieces and/or merch pieces (if we end up having merch) if they choose.
Art can be illustrations, comics, collages, etc. Artists will be encouraged to be creative in their compositions and storytelling through their work.
Recognizing that different artists have different styles, fully rendered pieces will not be required, but artists will be encouraged to bring their best work to the project.
Final pieces can originate as a digital or traditional piece so long as it meets the digital submission requirements.
Artists will be provided with .psd files (or comparable if you need a different format) that will have page dimensions, bleed, and safety margins marked out to use as reference (see below for example layout).
All work must be a minimum 300 dpi in a CMYK colour space.
Currently, the hope is to have a full colour Zine, but pending printing costs, artists should be prepared to complete their work in black and white.
Artists can collaborate with contributing writers if they choose, but it is not required.
Artists will be asked to not share more than cropped WIPs outside of the private Zine channels prior to Zine release.
Artists retain full rights to their work and can share and profit from their work as they see fit after Zine release.
writers
Successful writing contributors will be asked to complete one (1) piece of writing of up to 5000 words (no minimum word count will be set).
Written works will preferably be narrative fanfiction, but other forms of writing (meta/essay, poetry, article, etc) will be readily considered.
Complex formatting (ie. text messages) should be okay’d with the mod(s) first. Those portions may need to be generated as B&W images to simplify typesetting.
Writers can collaborate with contributing artists if they choose, but it is not required.
Writers will be asked to not share more than small snippets of WIPs outside of the private Zine channels prior to Zine release. Permission for an outside beta reader/proofreader may be granted if one cannot be found from within the project, but should be approved by the mod(s) first.
Writers retain full rights to their work and can share and profit from their work as they see fit after Zine release.
contributor expectations
There are certain expectations the Zine has for contributors, both in their work and behaviour that will help make this small community one that is safe, productive, and fun. Please read these guidelines carefully and understand that in applying to be a contributor to this Zine, you are agreeing to abide by them.
All contributors must be 18 years old or older by the end of the application deadline.
Contributors have (or are willing to make) a Discord account and join the zine Discord server to facilitate communication. (Membership in the server is required, but participation is optional.)
Contributors are expected to communicate regularly and in a reasonable time frame (ideally within 24 hours, give or take).
▪ There will be periodic check-ins to ensure Zine pieces are progressing on schedule.
▪ Extensions can and will be arranged for those who need them provided the need for one is communicated promptly.
▪ Missing two or more check-ins without prior communication or ghosting the mod(s) may result in removal from the project.Overall behaviour is expected to be courteous and kind. Any harassment, discrimination, or hateful rhetoric, either in or outside of the project channels, will result in removal from the project.
Use of generative AI or similar programs/apps/software in any form is strictly prohibited. Doing so will result in removal from the project.
And of course, there are things the contributors can and should expect from the mod/organizer(s):
The mod(s) will respond promptly to any and all inquiries, no matter the subject, within 24 hours.
The mod(s) will do their utmost to remain unbiased, and entertain any and all respectful suggestions and criticisms when it comes to organization, workflow, etc, for the Zine. Some contributors may have more experience with Zines than the mod, and that experience has value.
Every effort will be made to have the Zine finances and organization be as transparent as possible. Contributors will have viewing access to cost/pricing spreadsheets throughout the project, and a summary of those spreadsheets will be publicly published on the Zine socials at project end.
Any and all mods will display a level of professionalism, and their behaviour should meet or exceed the behaviour expectations set out for the contributors.
Any issues or concerns with these expecations can be brought to the attention of Velvetwastaken, either though her socials, or the main Zine socials. It’s important that everyone involved in this project has a good experience and that we all, no matter our roles, have fun creating something for a fandom and ship we love.
application guidelines
These guidelines are just that: guidelines. As a hopeful contributor, you should know what your strengths are and where your skills lay. You are encouraged to display your best work in the best light. However, you should still keep these guidelines in mind to give your application the best chance of success.
Make sure your work is not paywalled, password protected, or otherwise restricted. If the mod(s) cannot view your work, you cannot be considered for a contributor spot:
▪ Double check the privacy settings of whatever site you’re using to host your work.
▪ Double check that any links provided are correct and active.
▪ Double check your submission is as complete as possible; there’s no guarantee applications can be altered after submission.NSFW/gore is permitted.
Hopeful contributors may apply for both artist and writer positions, but will only be selected for a single role in the Zine. Please indicate your preference of role in your application, if applicable.
Any applicant found to have used generative AI or similar programs/apps/software in any form will be disqualified immediately.

questions & answers
These are mostly questions received via our social media and Interest Check.
If you have a question, please reach out! Send an email, a bsky DM, or tumblr ask! What's a zine?
According to wikipedia, a zine (pronounced ZEEN, as in magazine) is a "small circulation self-published work," usually produced by a single person or small group.
A fanzine (portmanteau of fan and magazine) is a "non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts [...] for the pleasure of others who share their interests."
The history of zines and fanzines is longer than you might think. It's a rabbit hole well worth the dive if you're interested in learning more. Will this zine have a specific theme?
No, the theme for the zine is really just 'Ganqing' and their relationship. Contributors will be free to choose how they'd like to portray the characters in their art/story.What timezone is the zine based in?
Mountain Time (currently Mountain Standard Time), or UTC -7.Will there be a selection process?
Yes, there will be a selection process. There was so much interest for this zine, that we will be running applications for people who would like to contribute, which will open officially on January 19, 2025. And becasue of the nature of applications, it may, unfortunately, turn out that not everyone who applies will be able to participate in the way they would like to.Why not just accept everyone who wants to contribute?
Mostly to keep costs under control. I was very ambitious and opted to make this a physical zine. And then I went insane and decided to make them myself. Each page of the zine has a cost associated with it, from the paper it's printed on to the ink used. I'm fortunate to have a laser printer already so b&w printing will be somewhat reasonable. And I recently got a professional grade inkjet printer to handle colour, but as we all know, Big Ink is a scam and that shit is expensive as hell. I'm already expecting to go into the red to cover some of the ink costs to keep the overall cost of the zine from getting astronomically high.I would still encourage anyone who is interested to apply.Who can apply?
Anyone who wants to, provided they are at least 18 years old or older, create their work themselves (use of AI will not be allowed in any way, shape, or form), and can commit to the expected project specifications and timelines.
Even if you don't typically post your art or writing publicly or online, you can still submit an application with your work in a gdoc or similar hosting service. As long as the mod(s) can see it, it will work for an application. How much advanced notice will be given for the shop opening?
As much as possible! Times are definitely tough for a lot of us, so we will aim to give as much of a heads-up as we can for people to plan out their finances well in advance.
There is a tentative schedule up on our carrd (under the timeline tab), and any major changes will be announced on our socials. But those changes will only ever be to push dates back, never up, so hopefully no one will be caught unawares.
